The clerk of the courts began in 1803 and was originally appointed by the Common Pleas Judge to serve for a seven year term.  The 1851 Constitution changed the term to be an elected position serving for a three year term.  This was again changed in 1936 to be a four year term limit.  The clerk maintains all Common Pleas Court records and is required to file a complete record of all cases maintaining records such as appearance dockets, trial dockets, journals, execution dockets, and indices to those records.  The clerk also files many other records and has other duties relating to the courts.

The structure of the courts in Warren County has varied over the years.  It is important to understand this structure to find the specific record.  However the clerk maintained these records and currently mot are either filed at the clerk’s office or at the archives.

County Clerk or Clerk of Courts also maintained the following records:

Currently in Warren County, the Clerk of Courts has three divisions: legal, title and county court.  The legal division is concerned with civil, criminal or domestic court cases.  The title division deals mainly with title registration for automobiles.  The County Court division was recently added as a jurisdiction within the past few years and deals with cases from the county court.
